So glad you look a leap to Substack. Your flight attendant story reminded me that I met you by chance at the wine bar in Logan airport when you were going to Italy and I was going to London on business. We chatted about Grub Street and the novel I was currently writing. That novel is buried in my closet never to see the light of day, but I’m still writing, which was your advice to me. “Just write it.” I’ve been a fan ever since.
I LOVED Fly Girl and I think I will really enjoy the documentary. Thanks for this newsletter and sharing a little of your life a couple of times/month.
Thank you for sharing the exciting news about the upcoming PBS documentary that features your experiences as a TWA flight attendant during the golden age of aviation. I was delighted to read that Fly Girl will receive national attention through this American Experience film.
Fly Girl checks all the boxes--coming of age amidst the adventure of air travel in the late 1970s and 80s, grappling with the dreams and limitations placed on a working-class girl from Rhode Island, and navigating the triumphs and tribulations of an industry in flux.
I love that your personal journey shines a light on this fascinating period in aviation history. The trailer for "Fly With Me" alone transports the viewer back in time with its visuals and music. Yet the glimpse we get of you recounting your days as a TWA flight attendant makes it clear this is not merely a nostalgia trip but rather an intimate look at the women who represented the face of commercial flight in that era.
Most of all, I appreciate that you have found and finely tuned the broader narrative running through your many colorful anecdotes from life at 35,000 feet. Transforming those delightfully binge-worthy cocktail party stories into a compelling memoir is no small feat. It seems you have successfully turned what was once a personal lark into a tale with historical and cultural resonance.
Keep writing! The world can't get enough authentic voices like yours.
Great newsletter! I saw the trailer on the last American Experience a few weeks ago and I thought of you, so glad to hear you’re involved. My husband and I are really looking forward to it. Love the pictures! I agree that the beach is restorative, therapeutic, fun, I could go on…. Most of my childhood was in Monmouth County, NJ, 15 minutes from the beach.
Ann, congratulations on the PBS show! I loved reading Fly Girl and am looking forward to viewing your story through the broader lens of women working in aviation at that time.
Also, loving the newsletter. Thanks for sharing your 'Three Things' every two weeks!
Enjoy your time in Seattle. We are having some nice spring like weather in Washington State these days, enough to get out in the garden. I see that the event is sold out. The orange yarn looks luscious. It is a color I cannot wear since I have a yellow tone to my skin. So I am sure it will be a hit on your head. I just finished reading one of your books I have had in my library for sometime, Knitting Pearls, and surely enjoyed all those knitting and non knitting sentiments. Knitting is a salvation. Looking forward to reading your new book.
Love your newsletter! I've enjoyed reading Michael's newsletter, including your book recommendations. And now I'll look forward to reading your substack. Thank you!
Just watched the trailer! Can’t wait to watch the whole show. Love your new substack, a slice of joy to read in the morning
So wonderful to hear your voice, too! I really enjoy Michael’s posts, and am now looking forward to your three-part format. Thank you!
